GMC is gearing up for an ambitious global expansion into Australia, New Zealand, and China following a remarkable performance in 2023.
Building on their success in North America, the brand is set to introduce the Yukon full-size SUV to these thriving markets, with sales in China starting in 2024 and Australia/New Zealand in 2025.
This move follows GMC's successful entry into the South Korean market in 2023, introducing the GMC Sierra LD pickup truck and making strides in the premium truck segment.
These new markets will complement GMC's existing operations in the US, Mexico, Canada, and the Middle East, showcasing the brand's widespread appeal and momentum on a global scale.
Duncan Aldred, the global vice president of Buick and GMC, expressed excitement about GMC's future, stating, "GMC is in the most exciting era in its history as we look forward to growing competitively in our home market while venturing into new ones."
GMC concluded 2023 in the US with a noteworthy 6.5% increase in retail sales, marking the brand's best overall sales performance since 2017. Key contributors to this success were the Sierra LD and HD nameplates, achieving their best combined sales year on record and experiencing a Sixth consecutive year of segment share growth. The HUMMER EV pickup truck and SUV also played a significant role, with retail sales doubling from 2022 to 2023. Denali and AT4 models reached their highest annual volume (34% and 19% respectively), driving record average transaction prices for GMC. In 2024, both models celebrate milestones: Denali's 25th year and AT4's fifth year in the GMC lineup.
GMC's global success extended to current international markets, including Canada, where retail sales increased by 10% in 2023, achieving a record total market share of 5.5%. The Sierra HD reached a record retail market share of 29.6%, and Denali and AT4 models accounted for 53% of the retail mix. In the Middle East, total sales increased by 15% year over year, with Yukon/Yukon XL sales up by 12%. In Mexico, sales surged by 14.4% year over year, with Sierra sales skyrocketing by 90%.
As GMC prepares to broaden its global footprint, the brand's outstanding performance in 2023 positions it as a major player in the international automotive landscape.
