Figure, a robotics company dedicated to addressing the growing worker shortage through humanoid robots, has just sealed a deal with BMW.

The agreement involves integrating Figure 01 robots into BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, the only one the automaker has in the United States. This plant is responsible for assembling approximately 1,500 X and XM series vehicles daily and currently employs around 11,000 people.

While specific details about the number of robots and their designated tasks are scarce, the announcement mentions that these robots will be integrated into various manufacturing processes, including the body shop, sheet metal, and warehouse, over the next 12 to 24 months.

The robots will undergo training to execute specific tasks, making this collaboration seem like a proof of concept for general-purpose applications.

BMW's move is seen as a response to Tesla, which has already deployed its Optimus robot in its factories. Other automakers, such as Honda with the retired Asimo and Hyundai, which acquired Boston Dynamics, have been exploring the use of humanoid robots for repetitive and hazardous tasks on assembly lines for years.

The development of these new-generation robots prioritizes safety in environments shared with humans. Learning processes take place on-site through imitation.

Figure's approach suggests that their robots can enhance productivity, reduce costs, and create safer work environments, positioning the company as a Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) model, allowing businesses to rent their robots. Figure focuses on mimicking the human form and achieving precision in tasks performed with the hands, making strides in the evolution of robotics for industrial applications.
